NCBI is a leading resource for biomedical and genomic information, providing databases including GenBank, PubMed, and tools for biological research used by scientists worldwide.

Editorial Review

NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) is an indispensable resource for biomedical research, operating databases including PubMed, GenBank, and the Sequence Read Archive. PubMed alone indexes over 35 million biomedical literature citations, making it the first stop for any medical or biological research query. The tools for sequence analysis, gene expression, and protein structure are used by researchers worldwide.

The freely available access to these databases represents one of the most important public investments in scientific infrastructure.

Pros

  • PubMed is the gold standard for biomedical literature search
  • Comprehensive genomic and molecular biology databases
  • Powerful analysis tools freely available
  • Essential infrastructure for global biomedical research

Cons

  • Interface can be intimidating for non-specialists
  • Some full-text articles still behind publisher paywalls
  • Learning curve for advanced database tools is steep

NCBI and PubMed are absolutely foundational to biomedical research. I use PubMed daily to search literature, and GenBank for sequence data. The fact that these incredible databases are freely available is one of the great public investments in science. Indispensable.
