Apple Unveils iPhone 17e with Enhanced Features and Competitive Pricing
Apple has introduced the iPhone 17e, a new iteration of its basic smartphone line, which will replace the iPhone 16e. This launch marks the second consecutive year that Apple has released a new iPhone model in March, diverging from its traditional September announcements. The iPhone 17e will be available for preorder on March 4 and will hit the market on March 11, with a starting price of $599.
The iPhone 17e is equipped with an Apple A19 chip, similar to the one found in the more expensive iPhone 17. However, the 17e features four GPU cores compared to the five in the iPhone 17. The device also boasts an upgraded cellular modem, the Apple C1X, which offers faster connectivity speeds. The phone supports Apple Intelligence, suggesting it includes 8GB of RAM, akin to the iPhone 17. Additionally, the iPhone 17e features the new Ceramic Shield 2 front glass, which Apple claims is more durable and three times more scratch-resistant than its predecessor, while also reducing reflections and glare.
Significant upgrades in the iPhone 17e include the addition of MagSafe charging, which was absent in the iPhone 16e, and an increase in base storage from 128GB to 256GB, enhancing its value proposition. A 512GB version is also available for $799. The iPhone 17e offers three color options: black, white, and pastel pink. It retains a USB-C port, a notched display instead of a Dynamic Island, an Action Button, a 6.1-inch 60 Hz OLED display without ProMotion or always-on support, and a single 48-megapixel rear camera capable of 2x telephoto images by cropping a 24 MP section from the sensor.
Despite these enhancements, the iPhone 17e faces competition from the iPhone 17, which is only $200 more expensive. The iPhone 17 offers a superior main camera, a wide-angle lens, a slightly larger 6.3-inch display with ProMotion and Dynamic Island, and marginally better graphics performance. However, the iPhone 17e's increased storage and new chip make it a more attractive option compared to the $699 iPhone 16, which lacks a ProMotion display and offers only 128GB of storage.
The release of the iPhone 17e is part of a series of announcements from Apple leading up to a "special experience" event. Alongside the new phone, Apple has also unveiled a new iPad Air featuring an M4 chip and is anticipated to introduce a new low-end iPad and a more affordable MacBook compared to the MacBook Air.
