Austin Bar Shooting Leaves Two Dead, Suspect Killed by Police

Authorities in Austin, Texas, have identified the victims of a deadly shooting that occurred outside a popular bar early Sunday morning. The victims, Ryder Harrington, 19, and Savitha Shan, 21, were fatally shot when a gunman opened fire outside a beer garden frequented by University of Texas students. More than a dozen others were injured, with two individuals remaining in critical condition.

The suspect, Ndiaga Diagne, was shot and killed by police responding to the incident. Diagne, a naturalized American citizen originally from Senegal, was wearing a sweatshirt with the words "Property of Allah" and had an Iranian flag and pictures of Iranian leaders at his home, according to sources familiar with the investigation. The FBI is exploring potential links to terrorism, particularly in connection to recent US and Israeli military actions in Iran.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott stated that both federal and state officials are investigating any possible connections to terrorism. He emphasized the commitment to pursuing all leads to determine if others were involved. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis described the event as a traumatic moment for the city and expressed her condolences to the victims' families.

The shooting took place near Buford's bar on West Sixth Street, a popular area for students and nightlife. According to police, the suspect initially fired from a large SUV before exiting the vehicle with a rifle. Officers confronted and killed him at an intersection. The SUV was searched and found to contain no explosives, but there were indications of a potential terrorism nexus.

Local resident Kelson Lee, who was nearby during the shooting, described the chaos and his feelings of helplessness upon witnessing the aftermath. Senator Ted Cruz condemned the violence and praised law enforcement for their quick response. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson also commended the rapid police action, which reportedly took just 57 seconds.

The incident occurred just days before the international SXSW festival, prompting heightened security measures. The University of Texas, located less than two miles from the shooting site, expressed condolences to those affected, highlighting the impact on the university community. Buford's bar staff also offered their sympathies and gratitude to law enforcement for their swift response.
