iPhone 17E: Apple's Affordable Option Compared to Premium Models

Apple has introduced a new addition to its iPhone 17 lineup, the iPhone 17E, which is positioned as a budget-friendly option. Priced at $599, the iPhone 17E will be available in stores starting March 11th, with preorders beginning on March 4th. This 6.1-inch device joins the existing iPhone 17 series, which includes the standard iPhone 17 at $799, the iPhone 17 Pro at $1,099, the iPhone 17 Pro Max at $1,199, and the iPhone Air at $999.

The iPhone 17E brings several enhancements over its predecessor, the iPhone 16E, including MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging capabilities, the faster A19 chip, and an increase in base storage from 128GB to 256GB. It also features a more durable and sharper display, supports Apple Intelligence, and includes a 48-megapixel "fusion" camera that allows for 2x telephoto shots. These improvements align the 17E more closely with Apple's higher-end models.

Despite these upgrades, the iPhone 17E lacks some features found in the more expensive models. It has a 6.1-inch 60Hz display, the smallest in the iPhone 17 series, and does not include features like an always-on display or Dynamic Island, a feature that provides quick access to information such as ride-share updates. Additionally, its display is less bright, with a peak brightness of 1,200 nits.

Camera capabilities also vary across the lineup. While the 17E, Air, and standard iPhone 17 share a 48-megapixel main sensor, the iPhone 17 includes a dedicated ultrawide camera that supports macro photography. The iPhone 17 and Air models also feature an 18-megapixel front-facing camera, compared to the 12-megapixel camera on the 17E, which may result in less sharp selfies and video calls. The Pro and Pro Max models offer even more advanced camera systems, including dedicated telephoto cameras, and all models except the 17E have a Camera Control button for quick access to camera settings.

Charging speeds and battery life are additional differentiators. The iPhone 17E supports MagSafe charging with Qi2, allowing for wireless charging at up to 15W, whereas the iPhone 17, Air, and Pro models support faster 25W wireless charging. Apple claims the 17E can reach 50% charge in 30 minutes, while higher-end models can achieve this in about 20 minutes. Battery life also varies, with the 17E offering up to 26 hours of video playback, compared to up to 39 hours for the iPhone Air and Pro Max models.
