A painting by the renowned Dutch artist Rembrandt, titled 'Vision of Zacharias in the Temple,' has been rediscovered and authenticated after being lost for 65 years. Originally painted in 1633, the artwork was excluded from the official list of Rembrandt's works in 1960 and subsequently disappeared after being sold to a private collector in 1961. The painting resurfaced when its owners approached the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam for authentication, prompting a two-year examination by experts.

Rijksmuseum director Taco Dibbits expressed his immediate impression of the painting's power upon its restoration. The museum frequently receives inquiries about artworks from individuals who have inherited or purchased them, and in this case, the curators recognized the painting's potential significance. The museum had known about the painting for over a century but had never seen it in person until now.

The authenticity was confirmed through a detailed analysis of the materials, including the paints and techniques used, which matched those of Rembrandt's early works. The painting's signature was verified as original, and the wooden panel was dated to the correct period. The gallery's researchers concluded that the painting's stylistic and thematic elements, along with alterations made by Rembrandt, supported its authenticity.

Dibbits noted that the painting exemplifies Rembrandt's work at the peak of his early career, highlighting its high quality and the artist's dedication. Unlike some of Rembrandt's portraits, which were produced in large quantities, this painting reflects a deep personal investment.

The painting will be displayed to the public starting Wednesday. While its current value is unknown, Rembrandt's works have fetched significant sums at auction. The world record for a Rembrandt painting was set at £20 million in 2009. Other recent sales include a painting for £8.6 million in 2019, a self-portrait for £12.6 million in 2020, and another rediscovered Rembrandt for £11 million in 2023. In 2015, a Rembrandt painting was valued at £35 million by the UK government after a private sale, and a drawing by the artist sold for $18 million (£13 million) last month.

Rembrandt was 27 years old when he created 'Vision of Zacharias in the Temple,' which illustrates the Biblical story of the priest Zacharias being informed by the Archangel Gabriel that he and his wife would have a son, John the Baptist. The museum highlighted Rembrandt's innovative approach to the subject, as he chose to imply Gabriel's presence rather than depict him directly, thus departing from traditional visual representations. This painting is one of the few history paintings Rembrandt created during a period when he was primarily focused on producing lucrative portraits.
