NATO Intercepts Iranian Missile Over Mediterranean, Says Turkey
A ballistic missile launched from Iran was intercepted and destroyed by NATO air defense systems as it approached Turkish airspace after traveling over Iraq and Syria, according to the Turkish Ministry of Defence. The incident, which occurred over the eastern Mediterranean, did not result in any casualties or injuries. The Turkish government has expressed its right to respond to any hostile actions and has urged all parties to avoid escalating the conflict further.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan communicated with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, to protest the missile launch and to emphasize the importance of avoiding actions that could exacerbate tensions. NATO has condemned the missile targeting, with spokesperson Allison Hart affirming the organization's solidarity with Turkey and its commitment to maintaining a strong deterrence and defense posture across all domains, including air and missile defense.
The Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, a key location for NATO operations, is jointly operated by Turkish and US forces. It has historically been used for various military operations, including those against ISIL (ISIS) from 2014 onwards, although Turkey denied its use for the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq.
In a related development, Cyprus temporarily closed its airspace above Larnaca after detecting a suspicious object. This follows an incident on Sunday where an Iranian-made drone caused minor damage at a UK military base on the island. Two additional drones were shot down on Monday. In response, Greek jets and frigates have been deployed to secure the area, providing targeting coordinates for F-16s sent by Greece to ensure any further drones are intercepted before reaching Cyprus.
Despite no recent strikes, the security situation in Cyprus remains tense, with authorities taking all necessary measures to prevent further drone incursions. The presence of Greek military forces highlights the heightened state of alert in the region as tensions continue to simmer.
