In the lead-up to the COP31 climate summit scheduled for November, world leaders and climate ministers are invited to attend a series of meetings on the Pacific islands of Fiji, Palau, and Tuvalu. These gatherings aim to spotlight the severe climate challenges faced by Pacific nations and foster discussions on solutions tailored to the region's needs.

Fiji will host the official annual pre-COP meeting in early October, as part of an agreement among Pacific countries. This event will feature a "special leaders’ component" in Tuvalu, a small island nation grappling with the impacts of rising sea levels. The Australian COP31 President of Negotiations, Chris Bowen, announced that the meetings would focus global attention on the urgent climate issues affecting the Pacific and encourage investment in appropriate solutions. Australia is set to provide operational and logistical support for these events.

In addition to the pre-COP meetings, Palau will host a climate event in August as part of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), which includes 18 Pacific nations. Palau's President, Surangel Whipps Jr, described this meeting as a "launching board" to build momentum for COP31. The forum will emphasize priorities such as achieving 100% renewable energy, addressing the ocean-climate nexus, and accelerating investments to enhance resilience against climate change.

Tuvalu, home to approximately 10,000 residents, exemplifies the vulnerability of Pacific island nations to climate change. Rising sea levels and saltwater intrusion pose significant threats to its homes, water supplies, farms, and infrastructure. While COP summits typically attract numerous heads of state, pre-COP meetings usually see participation from only a few leaders. The upcoming COP31 will take place in Antalya, Turkey, following a compromise agreement between Australia and Türkiye.

The Pacific meetings aim to draw new commitments from other countries to assist Pacific nations in reducing emissions and adapting to climate change. These discussions are crucial for highlighting the unique challenges faced by small island nations and ensuring that their voices are heard in global climate negotiations.
