At the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, Pico introduced its latest XR operating system, Pico OS 6, designed for its forthcoming headset, codenamed Project Swan. This new OS will not be compatible with the existing Pico 4 from 2022 but is set to power the unreleased headset expected to launch later this year. While Pico provided limited information about the headset itself, the features of Pico OS 6 offer insights into the company's aspirations for its flagship device.

A key feature of the new operating system is PanoScreen, which allows users to run multiple applications simultaneously while maintaining a 360-degree view of their real-world surroundings. Users can interact with 3D avatars in this virtual space, facilitating a more immersive and practical computing experience beyond gaming. Despite requests for further details, Pico declined to comment on the specifics of its new OS or the Project Swan headset.

Pico's focus on 3D workspaces echoes Apple's approach with its Apple Vision Pro headset, launched in 2024. Jitesh Ubrani, a research manager at IDC, noted the unusual timing of Pico's market entry and its similarity to Apple's strategy. Other companies, like Sightful with its Spacetop glasses, have also ventured into XR workspaces, offering more user-friendly alternatives to bulkier headsets.

Pico aims to balance functionality and wearability with Project Swan, hinting at features such as a micro-OLED display with a pixel density nearing 4,000 pixels per inch and a resolution of 40 pixels per degree. These specifications closely match those of the Apple Vision Pro, suggesting that Pico's device will need to be more affordable and lightweight while attracting developer support to compete effectively.

Pico OS 6 supports various developer toolkits, including Spatial, OpenXR, and WebXR, and allows development in Unity and Unreal Engine. It is compatible with Android apps, web apps, and PCVR streaming. The OS also features WebSpatial, an open-source toolkit enabling app development using standard web tools, with cross-platform compatibility across Pico OS, Apple's visionOS, and Android XR.

Despite its open development approach, Pico faces stiff competition from major players like Apple and Meta. Google's launch of Android XR in late 2025 has revitalized interest in mixed reality, with significant developers joining the platform. While Samsung's Galaxy XR headset currently focuses on entertainment and gaming, Pico's shift towards a premium, work-oriented headset may be somewhat delayed.

Ubrani highlighted Pico's potential to leverage TikTok's marketing power, though he questioned its effectiveness for a productivity-focused device. Pico is expected to reveal more about Project Swan at the Game Developers Conference on March 12.
