Viral Film Challenges Tradition, Highlights Domestic Violence in India

A promotional film titled "Band Baaja Bitiya" has captivated audiences across India by challenging the traditional belief that a married daughter must remain in her husband's home, even if she faces abuse. The film, which runs for three and a half minutes, tells the poignant story of a father, portrayed by Bollywood actor Gajraj Rao, who defies societal norms to rescue his daughter from an abusive marriage. The father hires a wedding band to celebrate her return, symbolizing his pride and defiance against her suffering.

The film opens with the father receiving a distressing call from his daughter, Surabhi, and the advice he receives from others reflects a common mindset: that a woman must endure her marital fate. However, the father chooses to act differently, welcoming his daughter back with the same fanfare that marked her departure. This act of solidarity has resonated deeply with viewers, drawing millions of views and praise online.

Domestic violence remains a significant issue in India, with official data indicating that one in three women experience such abuse. In 2023, over 6,150 women were killed in dowry-related incidents, and police recorded 133,676 cases of cruelty by husbands or their families. Many women remain in abusive marriages due to a lack of support from their families. The film's portrayal of a father's support has struck a chord, with many viewers sharing personal stories of similar experiences.

Gajraj Rao, known for his roles in Bollywood, expressed his surprise at the overwhelming response to the film, noting that it has sparked conversations about the need for parental support in abusive situations. Director Prosit Roy, who describes himself as a "girl dad," created the film to challenge outdated values and encourage parents to support their daughters.

The film mirrors real-life instances where fathers have defied tradition to rescue their daughters. One notable case involved Prem Gupta from Jharkhand, who hired a wedding band to bring his daughter home from an unhappy marriage. Gupta initially advised his daughter to adjust but later realized the importance of supporting her. His actions, which coincided with the auspicious Hindu festival of Navratri, were intended to convey that he was doing the right thing.

Sakshi, Gupta's daughter, was initially unaware of the celebratory band hired for her return. The viral video of her leaving her marital home with a smile and a suitcase, accompanied by music and fireworks, has inspired other fathers to follow suit. Gupta emphasized that his primary motivation was his daughter's happiness, not setting an example, though his actions have encouraged others.

Rao and the filmmakers hope "Band Baaja Bitiya" will inspire more families to support their daughters and challenge harmful traditions. While acknowledging that change is a gradual process, they believe the film can serve as a catalyst for societal transformation, encouraging families to provide a safe haven for their daughters.
