Vivo Unveils X300 Ultra with Advanced Camera Features at MWC
Vivo made a notable appearance at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) this year, unveiling its upcoming flagship smartphone, the X300 Ultra. The company showcased the phone alongside an upgraded telephoto extender lens and a professional camera cage, marking a significant shift from its usual low profile at the event. Although the handset's launch date and many of its specifications remain undisclosed, Vivo confirmed that the X300 Ultra will be the first of its Ultra series to be available outside China.
The standout feature of the X300 Ultra is its 200-megapixel telephoto camera, a specification carried over from last year's X200 Ultra. However, Vivo is enhancing the camera's capabilities with the new Telephoto Extender Gen2 Ultra. This optional lens, which attaches to the phone's rear, extends the focal length from 200mm to 400mm, a development made possible through a collaboration with Zeiss. The extender is bulkier than its predecessor but retains a similar design.
Accompanying the telephoto lens is a redesigned camera grip case, which now includes additional buttons and controls. Notably, the case lacks a cut-out for the touch-sensitive shutter button, suggesting its removal from the phone itself. This was confirmed during a hands-on session with the device at MWC.
Vivo is also introducing a new accessory, a "pro-grade" camera cage, developed in partnership with SmallRig, a manufacturer of phone photography accessories. The cage features multiple cold shoe mounts, quick-release ports, physical buttons for shutter and zoom controls, and a dedicated cooling fan for intensive video recording sessions. This indicates Vivo's intention to position the X300 Ultra as a versatile tool for both photography enthusiasts and professional videographers.
While previous Vivo Ultra models were limited to the Chinese market, the X300 Ultra is set for a global release later this year. However, the extent of its availability remains uncertain, with the US market likely excluded and European distribution still in question. Despite these uncertainties, Vivo executives have assured that Europe will not be overlooked this time.
The X300 Ultra's focus on professional video creation aligns with the broader trend of smartphone cameras evolving towards catering to content creators. Although attendees at MWC were not allowed to capture images with the device, they were able to handle the video setup, noting its lightweight nature compared to traditional camera rigs. Vivo's latest innovations at MWC highlight its commitment to pushing the boundaries of smartphone camera technology.
