Apple has introduced an updated version of the iPad Air, maintaining its 11-inch and 13-inch sizes while incorporating several notable enhancements. The new model closely resembles its predecessor in appearance but includes significant internal upgrades, most notably the integration of Apple's N1 networking chip. This chip, which was first introduced in the iPhone 17 and iPad Pro last fall, supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 standards and offers Thread support for smart home control. Additionally, the cellular models feature Apple's custom C1X modem, providing sub-6 5G support with improved energy efficiency compared to the previous iPad Air.

Another major improvement is the increase in unified memory from 8 GB to 12 GB, a change that comes without a price increase for the base configurations. Despite a global memory shortage, the M4 iPad Air maintains its starting price of $599 for the 11-inch model and $799 for the 13-inch model. Storage options range from 128 GB to 1 TB.

Apple's press release emphasizes the benefits for users upgrading from older models, such as the M1 iPad Air released in 2022. The new iPad Air features a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera positioned along the landscape edge, which is more convenient for video calls. It also includes enhanced landscape stereo speakers, although these features were present in last year's model as well.

The M4 chip, while not the latest in Apple's lineup, offers significant performance improvements. It is up to 30 percent faster than the iPad Air with the M3 chip and boasts a 2.3X performance gain over the M1. Apple also highlights "4X faster 3D pro rendering" capabilities and features like ray tracing.

Pricing and configurations for the new iPad Air are currently available, with preorders beginning at 6:15 am PT (9:15 am ET) on March 4 and shipments starting on March 11. While an update to the base iPad was anticipated, only the iPad Air has been refreshed at this time. However, more product announcements, including updates to MacBooks, are expected from Apple this week, leading up to its "Special Apple Experience" event on March 4 in New York City.

This story is still developing, and further updates are expected as Apple continues to roll out its new products.
